because i felt the first edition didn't do my point enough justice. so i must necessarily insert a second stanza.
I Saw You - v2 (16 March)
I saw you die on that cloudless morning,
Slipping away as you tried to scale
One more hurdle than your heart could handle.
I saw you drift slowly but surely
Like the leaves on an autumn tree
To a fate symbolic of what you meant.
I saw you fade into the dark clutches
Of a blinding apparition who had stalked you
And possess you for himself forever, and yet
I saw you etch yourself on flesh and blood,
Scratching deep scars in smooth stone
Where innocence would never dare.
And as I saw you die, I wondered not
Why you died at all, but whether
Having died after living,
You would live after dying
Or simply die forever –
Too many times we see what we want to see –
Helpless are the blacks of the herd
When nature deals their fatal fate;
Blameless are the threads of our lives
As they unravel in our very hands;
Shameless are the prideful among us
Who can only savage as the beasts they are
And yet be savaged by the humble.
Pride colours our vision, and makes us see
Pain, death, evil and blindness,
But the blindness of humility confers us
Strength, renewal, spirit and clairvoyance –
How different the same world can be.
Fallen hurdles, dying leaves,
Ghostly figures, soulless graves –
This darkness in black or pureness in white
We should never see,
But too many times we see what we want to see.
I saw you die on that cloudless morning,
And as I saw you dead, I wondered
Why you died at all, and then
I saw you speak to me, a deep resonance –
That life was not about the black or white,
But the existence of gray.
